8 Leather Fashion Myths You Shouldn’t Believe

8 Leather Fashion Myths You Shouldn’t Believe

It’s not secret that cotton is the most common fabric in which clothes are made. From t-shirts and sweaters to suits, dresses, blouses and more, countless men’s and women’s garments are made of cotton. As a result, many people are skeptical of wearing clothes made of other fabrics. This has lead to a great deal of confusion surrounding leather fashion. To help clear up this confusion, we’re going to explore eight of the most common myths surrounding leather fashion.

Eight of the most common myths surrounding leather fashion

#1) Leather Clothes Are Scratchy and Uncomfortable

Leather certainly feels different than cotton, but it’s not scratchy, nor is it uncomfortable to wear. On the contrary, leather offers a superior level of softness that many people find even more comfortable to wear than cotton. Assuming it’s genuine, authentic leather and not fake or faux leather, it will feel incredibly soft and supple against your skin. You can wear a leather garment all day long without worrying it about scratching your skin or otherwise causing discomfort. The unique properties of this textile make it incredibly comfortable to wear.

#2) Leather Clothes Are Only Available in Black and Brown

You can find a variety of leather clothes in black and brown. For over a century, leather garments have been made primarily in these two colors. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that black and brown are the only colors in which leather clothes are made. As the demand for leather garments in alternative colors has increased, manufacturers have responded by producing and selling leather garments in other colors. Here at LeatherCult, for example, you can purchase leather shirts, leather jackets and other high-quality leather garments in more than a dozen different colors.

#3) You Can’t Wear Multiple Leather Garments in the Same Outfit

Another leather fashion myth you shouldn’t believe is that you can’t wear multiple leather garments together in the same outfit. In reality, it’s perfectly fine and even beneficial to wear two or more leather garments at once. If you’re wearing a leather jacket, for instance, you can wear leather pants to create a more cohesive outfit. The combination of a leather jacket with leather pants creates a stunning appearance. The key thing to remember is that your leather garments should match. Regardless of what leather garments you wear, make sure they match. If one leather garments clashes with another leather garment, it won’t offer any aesthetic value. Therefore, the color and overall style of your leather garments should match.

#4) Leather Clothes Will Shrink When Exposed to Heat

Most non-leather clothes will shrink when exposed to heat. If you wash a cotton t-shirt in hot water and proceed to dry it using hot air, there’s a good chance it will fit a little tighter the next time you wear it. This is due to the fact that heat causes the cotton fabric to contract, resulting in a slightly smaller size. Leather clothes don’t suffer from this problem, however.  You should still avoid washing your leather jacket in hot water, as well as drying it in a clothes dryer, but the properties of this textile generally protect it from heat-related shrinkage.

#5) Leather Clothes Are Difficult to Maintain

Don’t believe the myth that leather clothes are difficult to maintain. You can check the care label of your leather garment for instructions on how to clean and maintain. Most leather clothes, however, only require the occasional spot cleaning and conditioning. If you notice that your garment leather is dirty, use a damp washcloth and small amount of laundry detergent to clean it. Simply blotting the stained or dirty area of your leather garment should clean it. Along with spot cleaning, the only other maintenance leather clothes require is the occasional conditioning. To condition a leather garment, apply a conditioning product like saddle soap to the surface about once every few months.

#6) Leather Clothes Don’t Last Long

No garment will last forever, regardless of the fabric from which it’s made. When compared to clothes made of other fabrics, though, those made of leather tend to last the longest. It’s not uncommon for leather clothes to last decades. In fact, you’ll probably only stop wearing a leather garment when you grow out of it. This is because leather clothes last a very long time. And if you happen to grow out of a leather garment, you can probably resell it and use that money to purchase a new, better-fitting leather garment. Many consignment stores will gladly purchase your gently used leather clothes. With such a high demand for leather clothes, they can easily resell them for a profit, allowing you to turn old leather clothes that no longer fit into extra cash.

#7) Leather Clothes Damage Easily

Leather clothes aren’t immune to damage, but this doesn’t mean that they damage easily. Clothes made of genuine leather are actually very strong and durable, even more so than those made of cotton, wool and other common fabrics. Going back to the basics of this textile, leather is made of animal hide, with cowhide being the most common. Animal hide, of course, is stronger and more durable than cotton, wool and other fabrics. Therefore, leather clothes don’t damage easily. You should still use caution when wearing a leather garment to avoid snagging, tearing or puncturing it, but damage shouldn’t occur under normal circumstances.

#8) Leather Clothes Are Difficult to Find

If you shop at local apparel stores, you may have trouble finding leather clothes for sale. Although there are exceptions, most conventional retail apparel stores offer a limited selection of leather clothes. You may find leather jackets for sale — in a limited number of styles and colors — but you probably won’t find many other leather garments when shopping here. The good news is that there are other ways to find a large selection of leather clothes for sale, such as shopping here at LeatherCult. From leather shirts and pants to leather jackets, dresses and more, we offer one of the world’s largest selections of high-end leather clothes for sale.
